On Behalf of | Jul 29, 2024 | Catastrophic Injuries, Workers' Compensation |

The answer is yes. Losing a limb on the job is a terrible event, and it can change your life in many ways. The good news is, there are laws to protect workers who sustained injury at work.

Filing a workers’ compensation claim is essential

Workers’ compensation covers most workplace injuries, including serious injuries like amputations. It provides benefits to help you recover and support your family. If you lose a limb at work, you can usually get help with:

  • Medical benefits: All necessary medical treatments for your injury, including surgery, prosthetics physical therapy and more.
  • Income benefits: If your injury keeps you from working, you can receive a portion of your lost wages. In Georgia, you may be eligible for two-thirds of your average weekly earnings up to a legal maximum limit.
  • Permanent Partial Disability (PPD) benefits: Losing a limb is a permanent injury. You may receive PPD benefits, which provide compensation based on the severity of your injury and the body part affected.
  • Vocational rehabilitation: This helps you get training for a new job if you cannot return to your previous one.

In Georgia, a “no-fault” state, you have 30 days to report the injury and one year from the date of injury to file a Notice of Claim. Missing this deadline can bar you from getting benefits.

If a third party caused your injury, you might have a separate personal injury claim. This can provide additional compensation.

The journey is challenging, but recovery is possible

Recovering from an amputation often requires courage, support and proper resources. While no one prepares you for this traumatic experience, there are legal tools to help you heal and adapt to your new circumstances.
